In a world that continues to evolve socially and professionally, the concepts of diversity and inclusion have transitioned from optional ideals to critical drivers of workplace success. During a recent interview with Radhi Vandayar, President of EAPA-SA, and Marion Borcherds, and EAPA-SA President-elect, both prominent thought leaders in workplace wellness, they shared their insights on how EAPA-SA is leading the charge in fostering diverse and inclusive environments.

Expanding the Definition of Diversity

“Diversity is not just about race or gender—it’s about embracing the full spectrum of human experiences and perspectives,” Radhi emphasised. She explained how EAPA-SA views diversity as a multifaceted concept that includes thought, culture, socio-economic background, and personal experience. This broader lens allows organisations to unlock the full potential of their teams, encouraging creativity, innovation, and collaboration.

Marion added to this by highlighting the growing recognition of diversity within the LGBTQI+ community. “Workplace wellness programmes have increasingly taken steps to address the dynamics of LGBTQI+ inclusion, ensuring that their unique needs and challenges are acknowledged and met with sensitivity,” she said. This shift represents a meaningful step forward in creating workplaces that are not only inclusive but also supportive of every employee’s well-being.

Addressing Unconscious Bias and Fostering Belonging

Addressing Unconscious Bias and Fostering Belonging One of the core challenges in achieving true inclusion is tackling unconscious bias. “Unconscious biases are subtle, yet they can create significant barriers to inclusion,” Radhi explained. EAPA-SA’s practitioners are trained to help organisations identify and address these biases, fostering environments where every individual feels valued and respected.

Marion also spoke about the role of leadership in driving this change. “It’s not just about policies on paper,” she noted. “It’s about cultivating a culture where diversity is celebrated and inclusion is actively practised at every level of the organisation.”

Equipping Practitioners with Tools for Change

As a professional association, EAPA-SA is deeply committed to empowering its members with the tools and resources needed to champion diversity and inclusion in their work. Through tailored training programmes, workshops, and knowledge-sharing initiatives, EAPA-SA provides practitioners with practical strategies to navigate the complexities of diversity. These programmes cover a wide range of topics, including managing unconscious bias, fostering cross-cultural understanding, and building inclusive leadership.
Radhi described these efforts as “a call to action” for practitioners. “Creating truly inclusive workplaces requires intentionality,” she stated. “Our role is to equip our members with the skills to lead that change.”

A Shared Vision for the Future

The conversation ended on a hopeful note, with both leaders envisioning a future where every workplace reflects the rich diversity of South Africa. “This is a journey we are all on together,” Marion said. “It’s about creating spaces where everyone—regardless of who they are or where they come from—feels empowered to bring their full selves to work.”
Radhi echoed this sentiment, calling on organisations and professionals to join EAPA-SA in its mission. “Diversity and inclusion are not just the right things to do; they are essential for creating workplaces that thrive. Together, we can make this vision a reality.”
