EAPA-SA Free State Chapter Convened in Clarens for a Long-Overdue Care of the Carer Session combined with Strategic Planning

On 2 June 2026, the Executive Committee of the EAPA-SA Free State Chapter convened in Clarens for a long-overdue Care of the Carer Session combined with Strategic Planning. The gathering marked a pivotal moment for the Chapter as leadership confronted a growing challenge of member apathy and declining attendance at Chapter activities.

Addressing the Heart of the Matter

As professionals dedicated to employee wellness and organisational health, EAPA-SA members understand the toll of constant caregiving. Yet we often neglect our own well-being in the process. The Care of the Carer Session created intentional space for the Executive to pause, reflect, and be replenished. It was a reminder that we cannot pour from empty cups — the wellness of practitioners directly impacts the quality of service we offer to organisations and employees.

Charting the Way Forward

The strategic planning component focused on honest diagnosis and practical solutions. Leadership acknowledged that member disengagement is a symptom, not the root problem. Discussions centered on three key questions:

  1. Relevance: Are our activities meeting the current needs of FS Chapter members in their workplaces?
  2. Value: How do we demonstrate tangible professional and personal value for attendance?
  3. Connection: How do we rebuild community and peer support in a high-burnout environment?

From these discussions, the Executive unravelled a renewed roadmap for the Chapter. Priorities include reviving regular engagement platforms, introducing peer-led learning sessions, and strengthening collaboration with industry partners to deliver content that is practical, CPD-accredited, and immediately applicable.

A Call to Recommit

This Clarens session was more than a meeting. It was a recommitment to the founding purpose of EAPA-SA-FS Chapter to advance the Employee Assistance profession and support those who support others. The Executive left Clarens with renewed energy and a clear mandate — to reignite the Chapter by first caring for the carers, then serving the members with purpose-driven programming.

We invite all FS Chapter members to watch this space. The best chapters are built by active members, not just committed executives. Your voice, your attendance, and your expertise are essential as we navigate this new season together.

“You cannot pour from an empty cup. We care for others best when we are cared for ourselves.”
