Leading with Compassion: Understanding and Supporting Grief in the Workplace

Room 1

Liesl Townsend, Client Relationship Manager at Momentum Health

As Client Relationship Manager and EAP Consultant for Momentum Health, with decades of experience supporting organisations across sectors, I have seen firsthand the impact that loss and bereavement have on individuals and teams. Over the past five years, loss, whether of a colleague or a loved one, has consistently been among the top five presenting issues in most workplaces. Managers turn to us, the EAP service provider, as their first point of contact for guidance and support.
Through my work with numerous companies, I’ve supported managers navigating emotionally complex situations while balancing operational responsibilities. I understand their challenges, their limitations, and the pressure they face to respond with empathy while maintaining team stability.
This talk is rooted in both professional expertise and practical experience. I believe that when we equip managers with the right knowledge, language, and tools, we not only support employees through their grief, we help create workplaces that are more compassionate, resilient, and psychologically safe.
My background in social work, combined with my role as a relationship manager, uniquely positions me to deliver this talk with credibility, sensitivity, and actionable insight that managers can immediately apply.

Lisle Melanie Douglas, Chapter Chairperson of Nelson Mandela Bay Chapter

I am a qualified Social Worker who has vast experience in different fields of the profession. My journey with Death & Dying/Grief emerged when I started working as a Social Worker (1999-2005) at Hospice – now known as Palliative Care centres. I was exposed to this field in an immense way as I had to usher the patient and their family structure through the process of death and dying and beyond.

Session Description & Learning Objectives: (click + button on right)

Grief doesn’t stop at the office door and when loss strikes, managers are often the first to respond. But are they equipped to handle it with empathy, clarity, and confidence? In this powerful, practical session, discover how to support grieving employees while maintaining morale, productivity, and team cohesion.
You’ll explore the hidden impact of grief on performance and engagement, learn how to navigate tough conversations with compassion, and gain tools to provide both immediate and long-term support. From real-life scenarios and sample language to a grief response checklist and EAP strategies, this session will leave you with actionable insights and ready-to-use resources.
Whether you’re an HR professional, wellness practitioner, team leader, or senior manager, this session is your guide to building a psychologically safe, inclusive, and resilient workplace culture.
Walk away knowing when to lead, when to support, and when to refer—because how your team handles grief says everything about how you lead.

Learning Objective 1:
Empower managers to confidently and compassionately support grieving employees by understanding the types of grief, recognising common reactions, and using appropriate language and actions in emotionally sensitive situations.

Hidden in Plain Sight: Tackling Gambling Harm in the Evolving Workplace

Room 3

Lillian Masidiba Rampete Rikhotso, EAP Practitioner & Social Worker at South African Responsible Gambling Foundation

Lillian is passionate about mental health advocacy and creating safe, supportive workplaces. With a unique background in both gambling environments and psychosocial care, she brings real-world insight to wellness conversations. Her work focuses on practical, stigma-free approaches to support individuals facing hidden struggles like gambling-related harm.

Session Description & Learning Objectives: (click + button on right)

In today’s workplace landscape, where mental wellness, psychological safety, and employee support are key priorities, gambling-related harm often goes unnoticed. While conversations around stress, burnout, and trauma have gained traction, gambling is still widely seen as a private issue rather than a workplace concern. This presentation challenges that perception and reframes gambling harm as a growing risk to employee well-being, productivity, and organisational culture.
With the rise of remote work, digital platforms, and instant access to online gambling, employees are increasingly exposed to environments that make it easier to hide harmful behaviors. Gambling harm may not always be visible, but its consequences are: financial strain, presenteeism, mood instability, increased absenteeism, and even disciplinary issues. Many employers and wellness teams don’t yet have the tools or awareness to connect the dots.
Drawing on the frontline experience of the South African Responsible Gambling Foundation (SARGF), this session will explore how gambling harm shows up in the modern workplace and what Employee Assistance Practitioners, HR leaders, and wellness professionals can do to respond proactively and compassionately. We will share case insights and practical approaches that can be adapted across different industries, especially those with high exposure to gambling environments such as hospitality, gaming, and security.

Key areas of focus include:
• Understanding gambling harm as a workplace wellness issue
• Identifying signs and risk factors in a hybrid or high-pressure work context
• Trauma-informed, confidential support pathways for affected employees
• Empowering line managers and EAPs to intervene without shame or stigma
• Collaborating with specialist services like SARGF to enhance support and prevention

By the end of the session, participants will be better equipped to embed gambling-related harm reduction into existing wellness and EAP strategies. They will also gain insight into how workplace wellness programs can evolve to meet the realities of a changing, digitally connected workforce.
This presentation aims to spark conversation, build capacity, and elevate the role of EAP in responding to an often-ignored challenge, ensuring that no thread of employee wellness is left unattended.

Learning Objective 1:
Identify at least three early warning signs of gambling-related harm in the workplace context.

Learning Objective 2:
Demonstrate how to initiate a confidential, non-stigmatizing conversation with an employee showing signs of gambling harm.

Learning Objective 3:
Apply practical strategies to integrate gambling harm prevention and support into existing EAP and wellness programs

Vicarious Trauma Experienced by EAP Professionals

Nomkhosi Simelane, Director Employee Health and Wellness of Gauteng Department of Health

My academic background in social work and mental health, along with my professional experience in the Employee Assistance Program (EAP) industry, puts me in a unique position to speak on this significant subject. Through my direct experience and in working with EAP practitioners that assist employees in dealing with bereavement, trauma, and stress at work, I have firsthand knowledge of the emotional toll that practitioners themselves endure. I have considered myself a student of life since 1999 working as an EAP practitioner and still growing in the field of EAP and wellness. I have a Masters in Social Work (EAP), with HR and OD qualifications, thus redirecting this paper to the mental wellbeing of carers, which is part of human capital. My work experience has been in both the public and private sectors, thus giving me an opportunity to deliver the evidence-based material and open doors for further research within the EAP and employee wellness space.

I have observed how multiple bereavement and vicarious trauma became an underappreciated risk in our caregiving jobs, as it affected social workers and other EAP professionals during the COVID-19 pandemic.

This paper is the culmination of both academic research and real-world experience. This work adds to the expanding body of research on organizational resilience, trauma-informed treatment, and practitioner wellbeing. In addition to comprehending the experiences of social workers in EAPs, it focuses on creating evidence-based, strategic suggestions for EAP practitioners and leadership to better support mental health in the face of growing demands. I have a strong commitment to enhancing the sustainability of EAP services, beginning with the well-being of EAPs who deliver them so that EAPs can be better strategic partners who are aware of what is happening within their space before entering that boardroom.

Learning Objective 1:
Define vicarious trauma within the context of Employee Assistance Programmes and recognise the shared mental health challenges faced by EAP professionals, particularly social workers, when supporting employees

Learning Objective 2:
Apply trauma-informed strategies to enhance resilience, recovery, and professional sustainability among EAP staff.

Learning Objective 3:
Advocate for integrated mental health policies and cross-disciplinary collaboration to better protect the mental wellbeing of EAP staff

The Nervous System: Your Body’s Power Grid.

Regina Burbidge, Musculoskeletal Health Services Operational Manager at Lyra Southern Africa

Throughout my more than 37-year career as a clinical physiotherapist with special interests in musculoskeletal health & pain disorders as well as neuroscience, my view is to educate a person and make them the CEO of their own health. Empowering people to grasp this concept means I succeed in my interaction with others as it is key to well-being and quality of life. To fully understand something means more than just knowing the facts—it’s a deep integration of knowledge, context, and meaning. I aim to demonstrate this in my engagement to make the content of my talks relatable to everyone.
To me, wellness is the conscious development of the whole self. Embarking on a wellness journey is a process of searching for the appropriate “tools” to make you a healthier and happier human being. I like to assist people to find their own effective methods to use these “tools” for continued growth and development. It determines how we ultimately look, feel, interact with others and thrive in life and work.
My soft skills include EQ, Communication, Relationships, strategic planning, innovation and executive care.

Session Description & Learning Objectives: (click + button on right)

You are only as healthy as your nervous system—
a truth whispered in the hush between heartbeats,
where breath meets bone and silence sings.
It is the weaver of your waking and your dreaming,
the quiet cartographer mapping your every sensation—
joy, sorrow, the quiver before tears.
No muscle moves without its nod,
no thought flows without its thread.
Even peace, that elusive bird,
will not land where the nerves are frayed.
You may eat green, run far, sleep deep—
but if your wires hum with unspoken storms,
your body will bear the weather.

Learning Objective 1:
Link between body, mind, spirituality & connectivity explored with examples and how it influences wellness

Learning Objective 2:
What is regulation and dysregulation of the nervous system and how does it influence a person? Observable signs & symptoms explained.

Learning Objective 3:
Polyvagal theory explained & practical examples and why the ultimate gain is co-regulation
